Peter Elkas'
transition from rabbit to grown-ass man has been nothing short of
shocking. After cutting his teeth in Cancon indie pipsqueaks The Local
Rabbits, Elkas could have eased into middle age quickly and without
fanfare. Luckily for us, he did nothing of the sort and has matured
into a surprisingly soulful singer/songwriter. Wall Of Fire is a very
solid listen, especially if you're into Ron Sexsmith, Damien Rice and
performers of this ilk. The main selling feature here is the collision
of Elkas' powerful vocals and glossy organ/guitar-based arrangements.
"Fall Apart Again" and "Paid Back" are confident, blustery slices of
adult-alternative goodness, and there's real craftsmanship and
attention to detail at work here. Elkas is definitely an artist to keep
an eye on, and one who manages to make smart music for grown-ups
without sounding wimpy or boring in the process.
