Topping
last year's self-titled debut EP is likely the toughest challenge that
Toronto collective The Ghost Is Dancing will ever face. With The
Darkest Spark, the group made an effort to sound more like a band and
less like a bunch of friends who got together on a lark. The slow but
steady pace of opening track "September '01" foretells the darker mood
of this disc, while the sloppy indie pop that filled their EP returns
only briefly. Let's face it, if TGID put together a disc of 10 songs
just like the ones on their EP, we'd be calling them a one-trick pony.
The more deliberate and atmospheric music on The Darkest Spark makes it
obvious that they were aiming for something grand, but they're not
hitting the mark quite yet. Still, it's likely that this disc will grow
on a lot of people after repeated listens.
