After TP-3 tanked, R.
Kelly probably realized he needed to move in a new direction. But
instead of reaching inside for something fresh, he's providing us with
Double Up, an album that's part R&B but mostly crunk hip-hop. Since
Kelly is neither from the south nor a rapper, the album feels all
wrong. The title track (featuring Snoop Dogg) is essentially a
glorified pimp song. It's followed by "Tryin' To Get A Number"
(featuring Nelly), which is also about nothing more than getting paid,
with a few menage a trois references thrown in for good measure. Guest
appearances from Chamillionaire ("Get Dirty"), Usher ("Same Girl"),
Ludacris and Kid Rock ("Rock Star") further illustrate Kelly's lack of
ability. R&B is clearly in a very bad place right now.
