After last
year's brief Widows EP, many were left wondering if Attack In Black
could live up to the hype that followed it. Their first full-length
doesn't raise the bar for Canadian punk rock, but it maintains the
quartet's likeable nature and easygoing melodies, while at the same
time it tries to move away from the confines of their genre. The
Welland, Ont. boys get the most out of their Constantines-like rock,
but it isn't all gruff growling. Horns are used on various tracks, and
they slow things down considerably on "If All I Thought Were True" and
organ-heavy closer "Chimes And Church Bells." Granted, there are a
number of filler moments, but it's hard not to like this band, as
Attack In Black's best hooks are irresistible. If you're not smiling,
clapping and/or singing along to the chorus of "Young Leaves," you're
probably an asshole.
