Germany's Ulrich
Schnauss' ability to create mildly intense and lush electronic songs
without any trace of danceable or thump-inducing beats is a wonder.
Then again, Air also pull the same thing off and at least they're sort
of interesting. Goodbye is like Enya's saccharine new age music slowly
soaked in honey, but not the delicious clear variety, more the mangled,
crumb-infested shit that's almost not worth putting on toast. The
blurry album flows in and out with relaxing massage parlour-styled
synth lines and minimal whispery vocals. Rhythm is occasionally added
to the formula, like on the — I'm throwing up a bit as I write and
listen to this — Coldplay "Clocks"-sounding "Here Today, Gone
Tomorrow." When the beats kick in, the record sounds even more
ethereal, dated and simplistic.
