There are
only a few acts in the world who function so highly that everything
they produce is scrutinized on another level. For years, this list was
privy mostly to Radiohead, Bjork and Wilco, but the latter two have
fallen off the wagon while the former's next step is probably the most
highly anticipated album of the year (or whenever it finally sees
light). After releasing two modern classics, Animal Collective are
ready to take membership in this exclusive club with Strawberry Jam.
It's arguable that no other group on the planet are as focused and
committed to changing their sound so dynamically while maintaining
their whimsy and spontaneity. From the psychotic synth bursts of
"Peacebone" to Avey Tare's ambidextrous vocal performance, Strawberry
Jam is AC's poppiest effort so far, and yet it may also be their best.
Avey Tare and Panda Bear go straight for the throat this time, and it's
an attack worth submitting to.
