Upon first listening to the Foo Fighters' sixth album, it would appear that Dave Grohl has finally run out of the energy needed to keep rocking out the way he did on his band's last two records. As it progresses, the riffs come less frequently and the piano is pulled out more often, giving the impression that the Foos are finally settling down. This may put off fans expecting another Colour And The Shape, but after repeated listens, it's the softer songs that really higlight Grohl's songwriting talent. Similar to 1999's There Is Nothing Left To Lose, the beauty is in the subtle dynamics of songs such as "Summer's End" and "Home." Unlike grunge compatriot Chris Cornell, whose balladry continues to get cheesier each year, Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace positions Grohl and the gang as a band who are beginning to age gracefully while still sounding as vital as ever.
