My Morning Jacket — Evil Urges

My Morning Jacket's Evil Urges

Oh Jim James and friends, I'm such a sucker for you. This fifth studio album from the Louisville, Ky. quintet is a delicious mix of indie rock and country. The album, produced by James and Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, U2), strays away from the synths on 2005's Z and instead tries to emulate MMJ's full live sound. Instantly catchy tracks include "I'm Amazed" (with its fun bass line and feel-good twang), the title track and "Thank You Too." It's so rare to hear a band go from a classic country tune like "Sec Walkin'" to the epic eight-minute synthy-groove "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt. 2" all in one album and pull it off so well. I just have one question: What the fuck is up with the song "Highly Suspicious"? It's ridiculously bad and sticks out like a sore thumb. Did an evil urge make MMJ record it? Only a force of true evil would try to ruin a good album with such a terrible, terrible song.
