The 2008 version of
Motley Crue isn't so much a band as it is a brand name, having spawned a label imprint (Motley Records), a summer festival (CrueFest) and an autobiography (The Dirt) that will be made into a feature film in 2009. If the last couple of tours are any indication, CrueFest will be a hit. The Dirt was a delightfully sleazy New York Times best-seller, while the film is generating considerable buzz despite still being in its early production stages. With all that success, I guess Motley Crue don't need to focus on their once primary money-making vehicle, their music. Not that they ever really made any killer albums, but at least they were able to cut a couple of modern classics and a few strip club staples. But on the desperate
Saints Of Los Angeles, there's nothing close to a "Live Wire" or "Kickstart My Heart." Then again, the Crue can probably toss newer songs like "Mutherfucker Of The Year" and "Just Another Psycho" into their live set with the old hits and I suspect no one will be the wiser. Hopefully Motley 2008 are better in front of a camera than in the studio.
