Icy Demons — Miami Ice

Music Review
Miami Ice

In case you're not familiar with them, Icy Demons are Man Man drummer Pow Pow's side project. The band also include former Bablicon member Griffin Rodriguez (a.k.a. Blue Hawaii) and others. Icy Demons' third full-length features a brand of experimental rock that sounds like synth pop mixed with mid-'70s Kraut rock. While the opening to "1850" sounds like it could appear on a Man Man record, the presence of Pow Pow's falsetto (yes, he sings here) makes it into what's almost an anti-Man Man track, since it lacks Ryan Kastner's gravelly drawl. Then there's "Buffalo Bill" and "Crittin' Down To Baba's," which are what it would sound like if Can went through an '80s synthesizer obsession and rap phase, respectively. Unfortunately, while this sounds like it would be interesting, the songs don't go anywhere. It's one for experimental music enthusiasts and Man Man obsessives. To everyone else, it'll come off as little more than an oddity.
