Green Go @ NXNE 2008
- June 13, 2008
- Toronto, ON
- Supermarket
- 4 / 5

BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION: After a mellow opening from Jason Bajada the four Green Go kids (number five, Mark Andrade was on honeymoon at the Grand Canyon) jerked the hand break into a sharp left turn, sending the night down a new road of pumped-up electro party jams.
Grade: 78
Comment:Getting a transient 10 o'clock crowd to shake their hips and pump their fists is a real challenge. Most of the people in the audience probably had a lot of walking ahead of them, as venue-hopping is a favourite NXNE pastime. Mild bouncing and head-bobbing in front of the stage would normally have been a disappointing reaction to Green Go, but under the circumstances it was a moderate success.

Strengths/Weaknesses/NextStep:
Ferenc Stenton and Jess Tollefson wielded their keyboards like double
guitars. Pogoing on opposite sides of their synths, the youngsters
showed off the infectious freshman energy that is their trademark.
Tollefson's shy demeanor and Stenton's goofy rambunctiousness played
off each other like Laurel and Hardy. The young lady's inwardly focused
yin counterbalanced the boy's gyrating yang.

Strengths/Weaknesses/NextStep:
Green Go play enthusiastic party jams designed to wring every last drop
of sweat out of gathered revelers. At their best their heavy bass fuzz
and disco drums have a way of circumventing the brain to communicate
directly with the spinal column. More than one attendee of a Green Go
concert has thought themselves to be standing perfectly still only to
look down and find their body contorted into patterns of witless
dance-floor abandon. The crowd reaction wasn't as powerful as it might
have been with a more attentive audience, but the band played as well
as ever.

Strengths/Weaknesses/NextStep:
Green Go have a reputation for showing up in interesting, even
coordinated costumes often involving hot pants. They decided to dress
up for NXNE with Tollefson sporting tidy white slacks and Stenton
looking dapper in a tuxedo shirt with bowtie and dangling suspenders.
Maybe it's time for the Guelph kids to incorporate some slow-dancing
into their normally juiced-up performance.
