Grand Analog @ NXNE 2008

Live Review
Grand Analog (Photo by Zack Vitiello)
BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION: Grand Analog are well studied in both schools of hip-hop and rock. They utilize a live band and turntables, producing funk-infused hip-hop capable of getting the biggest indie-scenesters waving their hands in the air.

Grade: 81

Comment: Like that kid in high school who is good at writing comparative literature essays and solving discrete math equations, Grand Analog have a unique ability to deliver hip-hop that will appeal to the true heads and the 47 year old cougar that was dancing her heart out beside me.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
After finishing their first song, frontman Odario G. Williams looked out into the crowd with a disappointed frown and proclaimed, “If y’all don’t start moving, we’re heading over to the Horseshoe to get some beers.” His tactic worked and all the hipsters quickly gathered around the stage to wag their hands in the air. Williams kept the energy high, dancing from one side of the stage to the other and occasionally breaking into air sax solos.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
In my opinion, hip-hop generally tends to suffer when performed live. But with live bass, bongos and keys, Grand Analog were able to stray from the polished studio vibe and incorporate a nice touch of funky dub rock. DJ Catalist and bassist Warren Bray were especially tight. When the instruments cut out on the last track, Williams took it a capella and made it clear that he runs the group.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Williams probably takes his fashion style from Andre 3000, but it works. Decked out like an English schoolboy in a vest and herringbone hat with Adidas kicks, the frontman stole the show. The only time the audience took their eyes off of him was when he went to hug one of the other members.
