Mardeen @ NXNE 2008

Live Review
NXNE 2008
BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION: This quartet from Halifax is made up of Matt (bass, vocals) and Travis Ellis (guitar, vocals), Jon Pearo (guitar, vocals), and Jason Burns (drums). With an EP in the past and a full-length titled Read Less Minds available across Canada on June 17, they’re well on their way for not only more Joel Plaskett comparisons, but some nods of approval.

Grade:
89

Comment: With a rotating cast of three very different vocalists, this band’s set stays fresh with a mix of energy, guitar hooks, and a good time. With new material jam-packed into the performance, they might have kept too much focus on playing the instruments and not as much in having a fun time.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
The three vocalists in the front did a good job of staring down the first couple rows of people in the audience and stared towards the bar in the back. They didn’t seem to have much time for a good heap-o-banter but they put in the effort.
