Do Right Soundsystem @ NXNE 2006

Live Review
NXNE 2006

Hometown: Toronto, ON

Background/Composition: Toronto hip-hop collective Do Right Soundsystem combine freestyle and written rhymes with impressive turntablism for an old-school party music that rocks the collective body.

Grade: 84

Comment:
This is the way live hip-hop should be: discernable rhymes, turntable flexing and solid rap singles that remind you of a time when WalMart employees didn't need name tags because their names were already carved in their fades.

Strengths/Weaknesses/NextStep: DJ Anonymous Twist is the man. Not only was the dude cutting like a mohel, he was rapping at the same time. Plus, his speed, style and rhythm were unbelievable. If this guy doesn't get laid after every set, the world is in worse shape than we think.

Strengths/Weaknesses/NextStep:  After Twist's set, DJs John Kong and Circle Research kept the party going with a string of great tunes. The Pointer Sisters may have gotten the toes tapping and Eric B & Rakim definitely led to some head bobbing. But when they came with the Kid N Play/Young Black Teenagers double-whammy, it was like,"I'm about to lose control and I think I like it!"
