MSTRKRFT @ CMW 2006

Live Review

Hometown: Toronto, ON

Background/Composition: Hard and dark techno.

Grade: 90

Comment:
One part Death From Above 1979 and one part Girls Are Short combine to form MSTRKRFT, a remixing electronic duo. They did some interesting takes on indie rock tunes, like Metric's "Monster Hospital", and got the audience moving and shaking.

Strengths/Weaknesses/NextStep:  There are some DJs out there who have the ability to work well with the crowd without the use of a microphone; MSTRKRFT don't quite have that ability. There was little to no interaction with the audience. Thankfully, those in attendance didn't seem to care.

Strengths/Weaknesses/NextStep: Some artists try to remix rock songs into techno/house and the results are disastrous. MSTRKRFT do it beautifully. They take songs, morph them into someting else and create an entirely new way of thinking about them. Their bass beats are hard enough to get people moving, but not so hard that they sound demonic.

Strengths/Weaknesses/NextStep: These guys are likely in for a big year and they have the right look for success. Both Jesse F. Keeler and Al-P were clad in stylish duds and played it extremely cool while they made the crowd go wild.
