Lye @ CMW 2006

Live Review
CMW 2006

Hometown: Toronto, ON

Background/Composition: They're glammy, they're gothy, they're fourpretty people playing angst-spiked doom rock.

Grade:

Comment:
LYE is sponsored by Jagermeister, who ought to be prettyproud of their charges. It's hard to imagine where a band like this would fitinto the Toronto scene, but they've carved out their niche and damn if theydon't revel in it.

Appearance: E
Use Of Stage: E
Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: Eye contact? How aboutfull physical body contact? The intense lead singer was in everyone's face(whether they liked it or not, but most seemed to), flailing across the crowdedroom after breaking through the plastic curtains and wall of atmospheric fog. Suggestion: Cordless mic, or possibly a headset.

Composition: G
Songs: E
Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: Heavy on the drama, LYEwork their music as anger management issues combined with wrist-slitting angst, expressed by smeared MAC makeup and water sprayed all over the front row. Solidtunes, although their spastic antics seemed like a way to distract from the factthat many of their songs sounded the same.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: It's damn nearimpossible to take your eyes off of frontman Brett, who constantly walks a fineline between cute and nightmarish. Not to mention there was a large early crowdgathered to see them, many of whom had similar fashions/hairstyles as themembers of LYE. Target audience: Playdead fans, Jager drinkers, young girls wearing Hot Topic.
