The Populars @ CMW 2006
- March 3, 2006
- Toronto, ON
- 4 / 5

Hometown: Toronto, ON
Background/Composition: Power-pop trio that keeps banter to a minimum and brings the unapologetic rock.
Grade: 77
Comment: Comparing new artists to established ones really helps no one... On the one hand, people don't always hear the same alleged influences; on the other, it undercuts the work an up-and-coming outfit does when you merely offer up their work as "Sounds Like Band X." But what the hell, it's my review. Two words: Danko Plaskett.
Achievement of Rock 'n' Roll Expectations

60-69: Demonstrates some skills. Approaches rock 'n' roll standard.
50-59: Demonstrates some required skills and knowledge in a limited way.
00-50: Has not demonstrated required skills or knowledge.

Use Of Stage: G
Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: Three-pieces leave no room for weak links. As such, all three members of The Populars did their very best to offer a commanding presence. They're very polished — not only in the musician sense, but in appearing comfortable in front of the audience. Draping the gang's colours in flags around the speakers was also a nice touch.

Audience Participation: E
Sound: E
Composition: G
Songs: G
Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: For some songs, riffs and semi-windmills came straight outta Whoville (without feeling derivative). For others, bluesy licks and/or bass funk grooves provided enough X factor in differentiating between the occasionally similar-sounding pieces. Observational lyrics and Dave Klym's strong voice also added to the atmosphere.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: Handshakes between band members before a set is a sign of class. Still, it would've been nice if the trio didn't dress like... well, me. I know matching uniforms a la The Hives is passe, but there's something to be said for a little visual panache.
