Weezer Play Surprise Show In Toronto

Live Review

If you had to wait four years to hear back from a loved one, odds are you'd be inclined to give up on them.

When the City of Toronto heard that their beloved Weezer would be making a rare, unscheduled appearance at the Phoenix Concert Hall all were quick to forget about the long absence.

As soon as Weezer started playing before this sold out audience, which included plenty of well-known Canadian artists, it was like they were never gone. The band found familiar territory quickly, starting the set with "My Name Is Jonas." They continued on in that fashion for most of the night playing such favourites as "Undone (The Sweater Song)," "Tired Of Sex," "Say It Ain't So," "El Scorcho" and "Buddy Holly."

They also played four new songs, including one titled "Mad Cow." For over an hour the band played to a very receiving crowd who became ever more frenzied as the show progressed. All members of the band were a privilege to watch and seemed very energetic and excited to perform.

Fortunately for Weezer, their sound was good. The same couldn't be said for openers Dynamite Hack, who have a current hit covering NWA's "Boyz In The Hood." Their sound was too distorted, which at times caused them to be unlistenable.

The Weezer set concluded with "Only In Dreams," which seemed very fitting for such a magical show as this. When the last chords of the night were strummed the band put down their guitars and proceeded to applaud the audience. Lead singer Rivers Cuomo promised they would be back very soon.

After tonight, let's hope it's a little sooner than four years!
