Background/Composition:
This Peterborough, Ont. band’s tunes have been featured on shows like The City and Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
Grade: 76
Comment:
I was kind of confused why these guys were on the lineup. Toronto promoter Dan Burke’s known for picking high energy, grimy, down and dirty rock ‘n’ roll groups to play his shows. Squeaky clean Union City seemed to be the complete opposite of this.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Despite being on relatively early (9 p.m.), Union City did their very best to engage the crowd, mentioning where they were from and their name several times. Their live show still needs a bit of work, but they seemed relatively confident in their abilities and it showed.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Despite having been featured on such high-profile shows, there was little to nothing memorable in the band’s songs. They’re often compared to U2, but truthfully, their keyboard-heavy music has much more in common with Coldplay, which isn’t always a good thing.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Singer/guitarist Matt Crowley is clearly obsessed with John, Paul, George and Ringo. He used a Rickenbacker with a “Rubber Soul” sticker on it all night, and his hair was all Scouser shag circa ’64. He was also decked out in a marching band jacket that would have made the Gallaghers giggle.
