It has been eight years since the demise of Hope Sandoval’s band, Mazzy Star and except for the well-received EP, At The Doorway Again, the world has not been blessed with the opportunity of hearing the sublime voice of Hope. As with the early Mazzy Star albums, Sandoval’s equally lilting and gravelly delivery infuses the material on Bavarian Fruit Bread in beguiling ways. Without the at times overwrought psychedelic-tinged guitars of co-Mazzy Star founder, David Roback, Sandoval’s lyrics and charming vocal delivery stand out above the subtle backing of folk-sy instrumentation. The pace here is quiet and sombre with Hope giving every faint, poetic line a, dare I say, notable sense of hope, especially on songs like “On The Low” and “Clear Day.”
