As a master of the unconventional, New York’s DJ Spooky would rather subject his Technics 1200s to a hydraulic press than release another standard mix of aseptic chart-toppers. By walking a jagged path, he has thankfully blurred the line between DJ and producer in his attempt to reshape each of Under The Influence’s 26 tracks, much in the image of his rhythmically jarring solo works. Amongst the eclectic steeplechase of contents pops into perspective the finest (and most unlikely) hip-hop, drum ‘n’ bass and abstract beats to surface from the underground. A spastic, yet heartfelt breaks thriller, Emergency Broadcast Network’s “3:7:8″ sets the tone for the rest of the project. Spooky may surround himself in the perplexingly chaotic, but there’s warmth there as well. His poignant re-working of Anti-Pop Consortium’s avant-garde rap portrait, “Laundry,” isn’t half-bad either.
