Veritable Kings of the New Wave Of New York Gutter-Rock Bands (The Toilet Boys are fine contenders), The Black Halos know how to mix sweet harmonies with edgy 4/4 rock n' roll. Due mainly to a steady diet of pre-punk rockers the New York Dolls and the MC5, the band have honed their talent over the past few years, creating a unique brand of said music that is infectious, upbeat and about as subtle as a greaser's switchblade. On their latest album The Violent Years, The Black Halos create a beautiful mix of trashy rock and smooth production with ease. Songs are dirty and guitar-driven enough to make you feel raunchy, yet clear and enjoyable. Billy Hopeless still sounds like a drunk with a lisp that smoker's coughs more lines than he sings, but that is what makes The Black Halos so damn charming. Looks like Sub Pop may have a Canadian trump card again.
