A quarter of a century after the greatest Rock 'N' Roll band in Canada's history ended a 15-year career, The Guess Who are back to exploit both their tremendous back catalogue and the vast fan base's collective memories. Principle songwriters Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman front a hybrid band that includes original drummer Garry Peterson (the best rock and roll drummer Canada ever produced… Neil Peart and whoever else…eat your heart(s) out!!) and latter day TGW members Don McDougall and Bill Wallace (circa 1972-75).
The live album pumps out 22 songs that range from "These Eyes" (their first self-penned monster hit in '68) through to the novelty 1974 hit "Clap For The Wolfman" and almost all of their charting singles in between. As an added bonus in this collection there are three post-Guess Who Bachman songs (from BTO), "Lookin' Out For #1," "Let It Ride" and "Takin' Care Of Business," the latter receiving one of the biggest responses during their recent live shows.
Always a problem with reunion gigs is the talent of the involved members, but a quarter century later the band's talent remains in place. Cummings voice is almost as powerful as it was during the band's heyday and his piano playing is still exceptional, especially on "Glamour Boy" and "Orly." Along with the great guitar-playing of both Bachman and McDougall, who are not only able to interpret both their own parts but are able to revisit the superb work of the late Kurt Winter on such standout live tracks as "Runnin' Back To Saskatoon," "Rain Dance" and "Share The Land." The band takes a quieter "sit-down" acoustic approach to six songs on side one including "Undun," Sour Suite" and the only non-hit, the rarely performed "Talisman," originally appearing on the platinum-selling American Woman.
