Zero represents the first release from the once-prolific Brian Jonestown Massacre since they put out the shambolically glorious Bring It All Back Home Again EP over a year ago and ringleader Anton Newcombe apparently went underground for a physiological "cleaning out" of sorts. While Zero lacks an epic hit jam like their fan-fave "Arkansas Revisited" or mod-rock gems like "Oh Lord" and "That Girl Suicide," what these six songs lack in instant gratification they more than make up for in emotional honesty. Songs like "Open Heart Surgery," "If Love Is The Drug, Then I Want To O.D." and the meandering "New Kind Of Sick" show Newcombe at his heart-on-sleeve best, or worst, considering your point of view. When you've got untamed brilliance like BJM you can't help but wonder if TVT signed Anton in the hopes he'd overdose and they could Nick Drake his ass.
