WHAT HE’S WEARING
Issey Miyake jacket; Hutz made his pants and hat; scarves are from the set of Madonna’s first film,
Filth And Wisdom, which Hutz has a role in.
THE BAND’S STYLE
Gogol Bordello’s eastern European aesthetic is all about handmade items rather than pieces you can buy at the mall. “I grew up with a sewing machine, and when punk came around I was a good guy to know,” says Hutz. “I could sew up patches and jackets and make bracelets out of someone’s mom’s old purse.”
FASHION VICES
One-of-a-kind items. “It’s really that I don’t rely on anything ready-made. It just naturally bores me. Unless I make it obnoxious in some kind of way, I don’t see the point to wearing it.”
MOST TREASURED ITEM
St. Christopher necklace that was given to Hutz by a Gypsy woman. Native American slingshot necklace, which Hutz describes as his “latest power gift.”
STYLE INSPIRATION
Native American culture and Hutz’s grandparents, whom he grew up with. “I was raised in a juxtaposition of times where old-fashioned bad-ass-ness was still in the air, in that whole post-war generation. New stuff was just stepping in, and I looked at both sides and I thought to myself, ‘Oh my god, this fucking new style looks terrible.’ I kind of inherited [my grandparents’] taste for the post-war vibes, I guess.”
