There are many differences between 1977 punk and the mall-punk of present. Comparing New Found Glory's bass player Ian Grushka to the Sex Pistols¹ bass player Sid Vicious we can see that not only has the music changed, but the manners as well. We can tell by the photo that Grushka apparently knows how to play the instrument. Vicious on the other hand could not. Grushka is sporting a snazzy, very happening Sugar Daddy shirt, while Vicious had been photographed wearing the ultra uncool Swastika. New Found Glory's bass player has spiky green hair. Vicious on the other hand rarely washed his hair. Grushka as far as we know doesn't cut himself on stage, bash his bass on the heads of Mexicans, nor does he have a heroin habit. Sadly, the cooler than thou punk Vicious did all three. Then there's the problem of Vicious being charged with murdering his girlfriend Nancy Spungeon. Grushka is on tour in Canada, so he probably isn't a criminal. While Punk Rawk Grandpas bemoan what has happened with their punk and how the man has changed it to make more acceptable, we'd like to point out that if Vicious wasn't such a screw-up things could have been much different. He could be in jail, bemoaning the fact that punk has changed, too.
