It probably shouldn't come as any surprise that
Cradle Of Filth have titled their new album after a medieval French serial killer.
Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder: The Life And Crimes Of Gilles De Rais is out Oct. 28 through Roadrunner Records. It's about De Rais, who was a serial killer in his spare time when he wasn't marching with Joan Of Arc on the battlefields. De Rais is said to have killed between 80 and 200 people (though some guess closer to 600) in the span of five years and was eventually hanged in 1440 after being charged with murder, sodomy and heresy. Some think he may have been framed by the Catholic church, who supporters claim killed him to take his lands.
The disc was produced by Sabbat's Andy Sneap (Arch Enemy, Megadeth). You can hear lead single "Tragic Kingdom" on the band's
MySpace page.
Vocalist Dani Filth told Blistering.com that the album is probably the band's most extreme and most melodic to date.
"Even though I'm screaming throughout the whole thing, musically, it's got this symphonic, grandiose [feeling], but brutal as fuck," he said.
Cradle Of Filth have released eight albums since forming in 1991. Fans frequently argue about their sound, which has been described as black metal, symphonic black metal, extreme gothic black metal, satanic metal, vampyric metal, speed metal and numerous other tags. Cradle Of Filth's lineup consists of Filth, guitarists Paul Allender and Charles Hedger, bassist Dave Pybus, backing vocalist Sarah Jezebel Deva, keyboardist Rosie Smith and drummer Martin Skaroupka.
