Closely Years

Toronto’s Closely make dance music about the march of time in “Years”

The delicate, mournful tune is dedicated to "anyone who lost or is losing someone close to them."

Dance music needn't always be a party and the pounding kick drum isn't always a partymaker. Sometimes, it's a fitting metaphor for the ticking clock — and how we wish we could turn it back or ask for more.

Toronto trio Closely met about this time last year, shortly after producer and guitarist Joel Keitner lost his father to pancreatic cancer. "He was passionate about music and always supported my creative/artistic endeavours," Keitner says. The band dedicates "Years," their third single premiering below, to him and "to anyone who lost or is losing someone close to them."

It is a delicate, mournful work of indie electronica — a mechanical beat, a weeping guitar, and a vocal pleading with Time itself. Fans of James Blake, The xx and FKA Twigs will enjoy especially.

Closely's "Years" is available here. Catch them live at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto on January 6, 2017.
