Dan Edmonds first came to light as one of the wunderkinds behind Hamilton roots rock act Harlan Pepper. A year after that group hung up their spurs, Edmonds has returned by his lonesome — now, a rambling sidewalk poet.
"To Be That Needle" (streaming below), the opening track on his debut LP Ladies On The Corner, introduces Edmonds as a gritty, street-level folkie in the tradition of Bob Dylan and Lou Reed and maybe Armand Schaubroeck on the seedier and campier sides.
Over drum machines, saxophone and some ol' geetar, Edmonds leads an anthem to yearning, desire, and those unscratchable itches of all description.
"This song is about desperation," Edmonds told Chart Attack, "about being in love with a stranger and being infatuated with the idea of falling in love. I think it also touches on other kinds of desperation. The street people, the drug addicts, that I see on a daily basis. Those who feel contempt surrounding their existence. This song is for them."
It's also for you, as soon as you hit play.
Dan Edmonds' Ladies On The Corner is out October 7 on Missed Connection Records.
