Treeline Recordings is a small, Calgary record label with a big, big heart. Ryan Montemurro began Treeline to raise money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, while also celebrating the country's wealth of musical talent.
Taking It To Heart, Volume One, the label's first release, is a benefit compilation featuring (mostly) unreleased tracks donated by some of Canada's biggest indie rock acts. 100% of net proceeds go to charity. It will be out September 30.
The tracklist reads like a playlist put together by your best friend, Treeline says in its announcement. You could just as easily say it's like a playlist put together by Chart Attack.
Perfect Pussy's Meredith Graves pitches in on an alternate take of Operators' "Shape Of Things To Come," King Weirdo Chad VanGaalen shares "Delicious Plants," and Haligonian indie soothsayer's Nap Eyes present "The Rooks." Across its 13 tracks, Taking It To Heart, Volume One includes offerings from The Besnard Lakes, Kevin Drew, Duotang, and We Are Wolves, to name just a few.
Today, we have the first listen of a totally unreleased jangle-twang track by Wayne Petti (of Cuff the Duke and Grey Lands) called "Knife Fight Night Life," which will appear on the compilation. It's a good one.
Taking It To Heart, Volume One will be available September 30 exclusively on Bandcamp. Along with digital copies, the album will be released on 180-gram 12” coloured vinyl in a limited edition of 500. Each physical copy will be hand-numbered and comes with a download code.
If it seems a bit overwhelming, Treeline's Ryan Montemurro agrees. "The response from bands I reached out to has been more than I could ever hope for," he says. "Volume Two of the compilation is already in the works."
