HSY rasper Anna Mayberry tells us why she's decided to try her hand at this whole pop thing.

The roster of Toronto's Buzz Records is an overlapping Venn diagram of weirdos, many of whom crossover into each other's projects, music videos, cassette design, merch tables and vans. But that's usually in the context of sludge, punk or noise. The new single from beta/mai is instead a strictly pop-minded collaboration between Anna Mayberry of HSY/ANAMAI and Michael Butler of Beta Frontiers. It all started when Mayberry decided she was going to get over herself and try this whole pop thing, she writes in an email:

I wrote a pop song and brought it to Mike. Then he made it better. As a dancer and musician, I have a weird obsession/aversion to pop music construction. This is an experiment.

It's still up in the air whether the experiment will continue or not, but until then you can listen to beta/mai's propulsive synth-pop debut track "Never Enough" below.
