Speedy Ortiz were one of our favourite Uncharted discoveries of last year, and they’re not waiting long to make good on that promise in 2014.
They just dropped the latest single, “American Horror,” off their upcoming EP, Real Hair, produced by Paul Q. Kolderie, whose credits are a who’s who of college rock/grunge gods: Pixies, Radiohead, Dinosaur Jr, and Hole. That should be enough to fuel those “OMG, the ‘90s” exclamations that accompany every one of their releases, but Speedy Ortiz are no tribute act; if they echo those 120 Minutes all-stars, it’s in spirit more than practice. No affectation here. Just listen to the foregrounded, full-hearted guitar-and-drums crunch of “American Horror” and the heart-on-sleeve lyricism of underground hero/Creative Writing MFA candidate Sadie Dupuis, and get excited for the next dose.
Speedy Ortiz’s Real Hair is out February 11 on Carpark Records.
