Initially, the surprise new Actress song “Grey Over Blue” (out now on all-black 12" with B-side/The Wire character “Wee Bey”) crept up on me like a Raider Klan production without drums. I half-expected SpaceGhostPurrp to start muttering Blackland incantations. While the Texas trill makes a few modest cameos, the sense of doom is less “Baphomet-core” and more close to certain moments on the new Dirty Beaches double LP. There is some overlap in context: Drifters/Love Is The Devil was partially inspired by Alex Hungtai's break-up, and Darren J. Cunningham has voiced his decision to retire the Actress project after his next full-length Ghettoville, out January 28th via Werkdiscs/Ninja Tune. Endings make for interesting proto-ambient excursions.
