The War On Drugs and their great 2011 album Slave Ambient used to be blurbed about as the Sons of Springsteen as adopted by My Bloody Valentine. And while that release was a dreamily textured cousin of former member Kurt Vile, new single “Red Eyes” gallops out of the haze and commits to its own rousing imprint of heartland rock with all the non-stop passion of a jailbreak. But its most endearing accomplishment is not just the energy, but the versatility in how it’s maintained: the usual suspects like souped-up guitars, acoustic and electric dueling like drag racers, are present. But even when they give way to honking, placid church organ and Adam Granduciel’s voice melts from urgent to ethereal, the stomp persists, and your heart is still shifting gears
The War On Drugs’ Lost In The Dream is out March 2014 on Secretly Canadian.
