There aren’t enough spreadable dairy products in the known supermarket to compare to Sam Smith‘s voice, but you get the point when I say it’s like butter. It fortified “Latch” and helped it easily become one of Disclosure‘s best songs, and now it’s all over his “debut single,” “Money On My Mind,” his first official release following the Nirvana EP. But despite all this success, the London singer hasn’t escaped his timidity, which he faces up to on the track, as well as the crushing pressures from those leaning on him for pop success. He’s not selling out, guys, promise! Is he hedging? Maybe. But it’s hard not to get wrapped up in the block-rocking beat and zippy power-up chords.
Sam Smith’s “Money On My Mind” is out February 16th.
