At their best, AlunaGeorge has given an indication of what Aaliyah would sound like had she made it to 2012. And their sweet, flowery R&B vocals over house-inflected hip hop is an apt reflection of the post-Drake musical climate. “Diver” is their first single from their upcoming album Body Music, and next to “Watching Over You” and “Your Drums, Your Love,” two stunning singles that refracted hip-hop as two precious stones would, “Diver” feels pedestrian. It’s the Aluna Francis show through and through: George Reid’s reins in the production flourishes that made previous releases glow like they were pressed on nuclear waste, and gives Francis’s sultry, skittish vocals a floor with a lot less bombast than we’re used to. “Diver” may have broken the jaw-dropping streak of innovation relative to the duo themselves, it’s still a vision of pop past, present, and future that’s worth listening to.
