[listen] William Tyler – “Cadillac Desert”

It's shoegaze meets pedal-steel guitar, and a lot better than that sounds.

- Dec 14, 2012

The first two minutes of William Tyler's “Cadillac Desert” are a sobering reminder that shoegaze doesn't own the copyrights on window-rattling distorted bass. But it's a bit of cunning misdirection; the dirty buzz soon gets dissolved by dainty acoustic jangles and it's associate, a heavenly pedal-steel guitar. It's such an unexpectedly perfect combination that the rare mistake helps break down any feeling of calculation and heightens the ecstasy.
