New Music Videos: Major Lazer Takes a Shot at Cell Phone Culture

Covers, comedies, and a goodbye make up our list of the best new music videos.

Major Lazer – Run Up

The video for “Run Up” is a bit too accurate. Showing a party where everyone has their phone out, whether they are dancing, drinking, or even swimming, it seems that Major Lazer is taking a shot at cell phone culture with this one. We like the honesty, even if it has us questioning our own phone habits.

Yellowcard – A Place We Set Afire

Yellowcard is really milking the whole farewell tour/album thing, and we’re perfectly okay with it. Bookended by clips of the band thanking their fans, the bulk of the video shows the band hanging and taking photos with fans. Sweet and nostalgia-inducing, the video for “A Place We Set Afire” reminds us of what we’ll be missing in a post-Yellowcard world.

Set in a used car dealership, this video stars Aminé as Thad, a salesman, and has him in whiteface as DeAndre, a customer. Filled with tongue-in-cheek humour, we can only hope for more videos like this from the Portland rapper.

Passenger – Hotel California (The Eagles cover)

Cover king Passenger released another last Sunday, this time of The Eagles’ iconic “Hotel California”. Passenger’s version is more stripped-down than the original, and the desolate rural California setting of the video is a great fit for its sound. And the outtake at the end is adorable.

Oh Wonder - Ultralife

Featuring cotton candy clouds and watermelon disco balls, Oh Wonder's new video is as weird as it is fun. It's not senseless though, as it seems to reinforce the theme that you should be yourself, even if it's weird for everyone else.
