New Music Videos: Halsey’s Directorial Debut, Sylvan Esso “Die Young”

Halsey, Sylvan Esso, Conor Oberst and more make appearances on our list of the week’s best new music videos.

Sylvan Esso – Die Young

We like the video’s sense of humor: producer Nick Sanborn is dressed as a cop, harassing a young man with a curious bundle of electronics before singer Amelia Meath shows up and steals his cruiser while he is distracted. If you’re going to die young, you might as well have some fun first.

Obey the Brave – On Our Own

Power chords, motorcycles, ATVs, fireworks, and beer. What else do you need in a metal video?

Cat Clyde – Like a Wave

As a bluesy song with wistful lyrics, the moody video for "Like a Wave" is a suitable companion to its music. Hiking with her dog along a winter shoreline, the video emphasizes the nature-themed lyrics: “I feel my soul is sitting on a dock, looking at the endless sea”.

Conor Oberst – Barbary Coast (Later)

Directed by Cris Gris, this video follows a group of children as they go on a series of parent-free adventures, including a trip to a Conor Oberst concert. Maybe you never snuck into a concert as a kid, but this video will make you nostalgic for your childhood all the same.

Halsey – Now or Never

Halsey’s directorial debut is easily the most high-concept video on our list. Shot in Mexico City, the video features a pair of lovers trying to stay together against the odds. There are fights, a tarot card reading, and a climactic shootout. "On its own, the song is about two impatient young lovers, but in the context of the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom universe, the stakes are much higher for these two star-crossed lovers," Halsey says about the song.
