Coated in a hue of 70s filmic grain and smoke, Matthew Dear’s brightly chirping “Her Fantasy” has an appropriately sexually tense and avant-garde video to make you go, “I understand that reference.”
As homage to avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger’s oeuvre, nods to Scorpio Rising in the bikers to Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome in the gems being shoved into a yellow-clad Egyptian pharaoh’s mouth are scattered throughout. It makes sense with the tenor and tone of the song, which is bright and beaming on the outside, but has some lurking darkness teeming underneath, ready to burst like a ritual of demon worshipping bikers. Anyway, there has been a recent trend of the avant-garde slipping into the latest music videos, which doesn’t really bother me as long as the videos are as thoughtfully realized as this.
