Well-liked music venue Boiler Room kicked off their new morning music gig “Breakfast Show” with a two hour DJ set from Animal Collective, and now you can watch their process of playing good music and standing around awkwardly listening.
Starting off, the band play the kind of time-forgotten songs that you hear at 3AM on college radio, the ones you can’t place and feel inadequate for not knowing. I named one Kraftwerk song, so I’m good. But the set untraceably switches between the esoteric and the familiar. It’s like that impossibly good Chinese restaurant at the end of your street, the one that combines Indian curry with Singapore noodles, and turns what could have been an overly-ambitious atrocity into something delicious. A track that sounds like Silver Apples mixes into AraabMuzik which mixes into a 80s electro B-more club thrasher… it’s a pu-pu platter of music.
Also! Boiler Room New York will be broadcasting their inaugeral show today from 7-11PM EST, featuring AraabMuzik, Baauer, Physical Therapy, LE1F, and Shadowbox. Click here to watch that.
In my head, the rest of the set-list reads like an indie music Chinese buffet: no-wave banger with bleep dressing, new wave clanger with bloop glaze, jazz-dub-Afrobeat medley,
