New Found Glory Put Up Fight

Pop-punk may not be the juggernaut that it was earlier this decade, but New Found Glory are out to do their part for the cause. If the genre continues to decline, it will be Not Without A Fight.

That's the title of the Florida group's sixth studio album, which will be released on March 10 by Epitaph. The band's first record for the label was produced by former Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus (Motion City Soundtrack, The Matches) and mixed by Neil Avron (Fall Out Boy).

Lead single "Listen To Your Friends" is featured on New Found Glory's MySpace page along with a video game and exclusive webisodes that will be rolled out on a weekly basis.

Three New Found Glory albums have been certified gold for selling 500,000 copies in the U.S.: 2000's self-titled effort; 2002's Sticks And Stones; and 2004's Catalyst.

Singer Jordan Pundik, guitarists Chad Gilbert and Steve Klein, bassist Ian Grushka and drummer Cyrus Bolooki will keep up the fight here:

Jan. 31 Estero, FL @ Germain Arena
Feb. 21 Brisbane, Australia @ RNA Showgrounds
Feb. 22 Sydney, Australia @ TBA
Feb. 27 Melbourne, Australia @ Melbourne Showgrounds
Feb. 28 Adelaide, Australia @ Bonython Park
March 2 Perth, Australia @ Steel Blue Oval
March 4 Osaka, Japan @ Zepp
March 5 Nagoya, Japan @ Zepp
March 7 Tokyo, Japan @ Studio Coast
May 1 East Rutherford, NJ @ Meadowlands Sports Complex

Here are the songs on Not Without A Fight:

"Right Where We Left Off"
"Don’t Let Her Pull You Down"
"Listen To Your Friends"
"47"
"Truck Stop Blues"
"Tangled Up"
"I'll Never Love Again"
"Reasons"
"Such A Mess"
"Heartless At Best"
"This Isn’t You"
"Don’t Let This Be The End"

Feist Raised $200,000 For Charities

If you bought merchandise from Feist's website last year, your money went to a good cause.

Feist donated all of the proceeds from sales of T-shirts, CDs, music boxes and other merchandise to Doctors Without Borders, CARE Canada, War Child Canada and The Salvation Army.

"We've tallied the numbers, connected the dots, and are delighted to report that over $200,000 has been donated to various excellent organizations," Feist wrote in a Jan. 7 MySpace blog entry.

"All of these agencies will continue to do immeasurably positive things, like: build schools, dig wells, educate communities and—in general—do piles of good well beyond the reach of rock and roll.

"We also undertook an incredible food drive! Near $20,000 was donated to food banks across Canada, not including the incredible 17,000 pounds of food that was delivered to tables across Canada during the November tour."

Feist encourages fans to continue to donate to or volunteer to work at their local food bank so people can fill their tummies during the cold weather and year-round.

Hitchcock And Venus 3 Say Goodnight To Oslo

Charmingly eccentric British singer, songwriter and guitarist Robyn Hitchcock will release his second album with The Venus 3 through Yep Roc on Feb. 17.

Goodnight Oslo follows 2006's excellent Ole! Tarantula and features the return of R.E.M.'s Peter Buck (guitar), Scott McCaughey (bass) and Bill Rieflin (drums) as Hitchcock's backing band.

"The boys are all happy to take risks, but they build a steady bridge over every ravine," Hitchcock says.

"Peter can go anywhere I go, and then explain to me how we get out again. Scott is super-warm and the heart of us. Bill is precise, works with a clear mind, dices the beat like a sushi chef, and puts in amazing rolls, too. Like Davy Jones and Graham Nash, I'm the Englishman of the group."

Goodnight Oslo includes guest vocal contributions from The Decemberists' Colin Meloy, Harvey Danger's Sean Nelson and Hitchcock's former Soft Boys and Egyptians bandmate Morris Windsor, as well as horns from Terry Edwards.

The 10-track album was recorded at Wavelab Studio in Tucson, Ariz., Chroma Sound in Seattle and Hitchcock's London, England home. Overdubs were added in New York City and Cardiff, Wales.

Fans who pre-order Goodnight Oslo from Yep Roc's web shop will receive a limited-edition three-song bonus disc that includes: "Up To Our Nex," featured in director Jonathan Demme's film, Rachel Getting Married; "I Just Wanna Be Loved," a new song featuring Grant Lee Phillips; and "Nothing Makes Me Cry," an Ole! Tarantula B-side. A limited-edition vinyl version of Goodnight Oslo will also be available.

Hitchcock first started attracting his dedicated fan base in the late '70s with the neo-psychedelic punk group The Soft Boys, enhanced it with his backing band The Egyptians in the '80s and '90s, and has continued to release solo albums in addition to the Venus 3 records. The 55-year-old shows no signs of slowing down.

Hitchcock is the subject of a pair of films directed by John Edginton for the Sundance Channel: the documentary profile Sex, Food, Death... And Insects, and a concert film documenting the New York stop on the November 2008 tour where Hitchcock played 1984's I Often Dream Of Trains in its entirety. He performed two songs in Rachel Getting Married and has been writing songs with XTC's Andy Partridge.

"You never know when the clock will stop," Hitchcock reflects. "I will probably never time-travel, heal the sick or levitate, which were the natural ambitions I had as a boy.

"But I have trained myself to write songs and perform them, and I'm still developing those abilities. I am past my peak as an animal, but not as an artist. Of course, your work doesn't necessarily improve with age; it just mutates. You have to give birth to those mutations, I guess. So my songs may be no better now than 30 years ago; they're merely alive in a different way, fed on different emotional nutrients, as I am."

Hitchcock recently joined Feist, Martha Wainwright, K.T. Tunstall, Jarvis Cocker, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Vanessa Carlton in the latest Cape Farewell expedition, an environmental-awareness project that sent a group of musicians, artists, writers and scientists on an Arctic sea voyage to experience the effects of global climate change.

"I had a couple of great jams up there with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Jarvis Cocker, and K.T. Tunstall and I recorded some new songs written on the boat," says Hitchcock.

Yep Roc recently issued a pair of box sets, I Wanna Go Backwards and Luminous Groove, which cover much of Hitchcock's '80s output. The label also released expanded individual reissues of most of his albums of that era. Plans are in the works for the release of The Soft Boys' collected works in a box set.

While North American dates are expected, none have been announced. But Hitchcock and The Venus 3, along with opener Catherine Feeny, will play these U.K. shows:

Feb. 7 Glasgow, Scotland @ ABC2
Feb. 8 Newcastle, England @ Academy 2
Feb. 10 Leeds, England @ Brudenell Social Club
Feb. 11 Birmingham, England @ Glee Club
Feb. 12 London, England @ Union Chapel
Feb. 13 Bury, England @ The Met
Feb. 14 Bracknell, England @ South Hill Park Arts Centre
Feb. 16 Brighton, England @ Komedia
Feb. 17 Cambridge, England @ The Junction
Feb. 18 Bristol, England @ The Fleece
Feb. 19 Cardiff, Wales @ The Globe

Here are the songs on Goodnight Oslo:

"What You Is"
"Your Head Here"
"Saturday Groovers"
"I'm Falling"
"Hurry For The Sky"
"Sixteen Years"
"Up To Our Nex"
"Intricate Thing"
"TLC"
"Goodnight Oslo"

Carolina Liar Aren't Porn Stars

Punch "Carolina Liar" into a search engine and you won't find anything X-rated. How can you be sure, you ask? The band did it themselves.

"I was working for a producer in L.A. who used to call me the biggest liar he ever met," recalls singer Chad Wolf. "It's not that I lie a lot, he just thought it was funny. We Googled the name and no porn stars came up, so that was it."

Coming To Terms is the band's major label debut and they've been on the road since its release early last year. You've probably heard "I'm Not Over" so many times by now that you can hum it in your sleep.

"Oh man, it's insane," Wolf says. "The song has been out since April and I can't believe this is happening still.

"Rickard [Goransson, guitar] and the guys have toured in other bands, but never this much. It's not hard, it's just a real gypsy way of living. You meet lots of different people and you quickly figure out who you can trust. But I've kept in touch with pretty much all of the people I've met."

Wolf knows the band's live audience is largely comprised of teenagers and their overprotective moms, but he doesn't mind.

"For the most part, it's been teenage girls and their moms. We did V-Fest and some other shows, and it's just cool to reach such a massive span of people."

The band worked on Coming To Terms with Swedish producers Max Martin and Johan Schuster.

"Martin just made everything so much bigger," Wolf raves. "He knows how to slim things down and he takes these teeny ideas and makes them bigger.

"What was cool was that he let us keep some of the stuff we recorded at home on demos, and just made it better. It was like there was an emotion there that you don't want to mess with. You just want to make it better."

At the end of the day, Wolf is proud of the band's work and happy to be a part of such an exciting ride. Just don't bombard him with fluffy emails.

"My personal email hasn't been working lately," Wolf says with a laugh. "I guess when you get 27,000 messages a day, it finally cracks."

Amy Winehouse: Terrorist Target?

Amy Winehouse and producer Mark Ronson are apparently named on a terror target list... because they're Jewish.

According to Britain's The Sun tabloid, the Ummah.com website has compiled a list of famous Jews to target in retaliation for Israel's ongoing military operation against Palestinian terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Sun reports that a user asked "Have we got a list of top Jews to target? Can someone post names and addresses?"

"The Ummah website has been used by extremists," British anti-terror expert Glen Jenvey told The Sun.

"Those listed should treat it very seriously. Expect a hate campaign and intimidation by 20 or 30 thugs."

Winehouse, Ronson, former British prime minister Tony Blair's Middle East envoy Baron Michael Levy, former The Apprentice star Sir Alan Sugar and Princess Diana's divorce lawyer Anthony Julius are among those mentioned on the site.

The comment comes after British watchdog group Community Security Trust reported that there had been an increase in antisemitic incidents since Dec. 29. A synagogue has since been attacked in London, as have others in France and Sweden.

In other Winehouse-related news, actor Josh Bowman has denied that he's romantically involved with the singer. Winehouse is currently vacationing on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, and several news outlets have reported she and Bowman were an item.

"She's sweet — but just not my kind of girl," Bowman told The Sun.

Another friend told the tabloid that "he thinks she's cool but that's as far as it goes."

Billy Idol Balks At Playing Yellowknife

Billy Idol fans in the Northwest Territories may be bleating rebel yells of anguish today after learning the British singer won't perform in Yellowknife two months from now.

A local concert promotion company tried to book Idol and his band last fall, but nothing was signed, and Idol's management company says that the former Generation X frontman has no dates scheduled for this year. But the Mojam concert listing website posted a March 8 date for Idol at the Yellowknife Multiplex. It has since been removed.

It's probably a good thing that the Idol concert turned out to be a hoax. The 53-year-old's hands would have likely been frostbitten way up there from those stupid fingerless gloves he fancies.

But don't despair, Yellowknife. You'll always have warm memories of The White Stripes — and The Rankins will be there on March 20.
Drummer Leaves Bedouin Soundclash

Bedouin Soundclash have begun 2009 less one member.

Drummer Pat Pengelly has left the band and, according to a press release, will embark on new projects this year.

Those new musical ventures involve Alexisonfire guitarist Wade MacNeil's Black Lungs. Pengelly will join his Dine Alone labelmate at four Ontario shows later this month. At this point, it's unclear whether Pengelly will become a permanent member of Black Lungs.

There's no word yet on Pengelly's replacement in Bedouin Soundclash.

Pengelly, Jay Malinowski and Eon Sinclair formed Bedouin Soundclash in 2001 while they were students at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. They've released three albums: 2001's Root Fire, 2004's Sounding A Mosaic and 2007's Street Gospels.
Wanted: Led Zeppelin Singer

Two of Led Zeppelin's founders will tour and record a new album together, even if frontman Robert Plant isn't involved, according to guitarist Jimmy Page's manager.

Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham (original drummer John Bonham's son) have been rehearsing together and are looking for a singer to round out the band, manager Peter Mensch told Britain's BBC 6 Music.

"Jimmy Page has been playing guitar professionally since he was 16 years old," he said. "Jimmy Page likes being a musician. That's what he does. He doesn't want to be a race car driver or a solicitor.

"So [Page, Jones and Bonham] did the show with Robert Plant [at London, England's 02 Arena in late 2007]. They had a really good time rehearsing, the three of them, before Robert showed up.

"And they decided that if they could find a singer that they thought would fit their bill — whatever their bill was at this stage in their career — that they'd make a record and go on tour. And I support that because, why not? That's what Jimmy Page does. That's his job, his hobby, his vocation.

"John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page enjoy playing with each other, Jason Bonham is a really good drummer, so why not? We just need to find a singer."

Chris Cornell, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy's names have circulated as potential Plant replacements. But whenever the new singer is found, the reconstituted band won't be called Led Zeppelin.

"Whatever this is, it's not Led Zeppelin," a spokesperson for Page's management company, QPrime, told Rollingstone.com in November. "Not without the involvement of Robert Plant."

Plant and bluegrass artist Alison Krauss released a successful collaborative album called Raising Sand in October 2007 and toured extensively in support of it. The singer apparently would rather dedicate his time to working with Krauss than with his old bandmates.

Raveonettes Plot New Album

The Raveonettes are getting ready to begin recording their fourth album.

According to singer/guitarist Sune Rose Wagner, he and Raveonettes singer/bassist/guitarist Sharin Foo are ready to hit the studio and want to record with a proper producer this time around. Wagner has produced or co-produced all three Raveonettes albums, and produced their last effort, 2008's Lust Lust Lust, by himself.

"Had a great creative talk with Sharin today and we're so ready to make the best album to date!" Wagner wrote in a Dec. 6 MySpace blog post. "It'll be released in September and we wanna do a proper studio album with a genius producer.

"There's only so much you can do in your living room and let's face it, whenever you pull out one of your favorite albums, it'll stand the test of time because of a timeless sound, excellent production and songwriting. Now's the right time for us to step it up..."

Wagner and Foo began playing together as The Raveonettes in 2001. Their debut, 2003's Chain Gang Of Love, featured songs all written in the key of B flat minor. Pretty In Black followed in 2005 and Lust Lust Lust came out last year.

Here's where you can see The Raveonettes:

Jan. 15 Boston, MA @ Paradise Rock Club
Jan. 16 New York, NY @ Webster Hall
Jan. 17 Washington, DC @ Black Cat
Jan. 23 San Francisco, CA @ Bimbo's 365 Club
Jan. 24 Los Angeles, CA @ Henry Fonda Theater

Twilight Dude's Music Plans Take Shape

Twilight actor Robert Pattinson is riding high with the success of the vampire flick and the adoration of teenage girls everywhere, but the same could have been said about the two Coreys 20 years ago.

And while a reality television show might still be in Pattinson's future somewhere down the road after his hair starts to lose its appeal (and height), he's already thinking of contingencies in case his acting career fizzles.

"Music is my back-up plan if acting fails," the 22-year-old told the Los Angeles Times. "I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket."

But Pattinson may have a long way to go if he wants to follow in the musical footsteps of actors Keanu Reeves, Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Joaquin Phoenix, Kevin Bacon, Vincent Gallo, Russell Crowe or (shudder) Jared Leto.

"I've never really recorded anything — I just played in pubs and stuff — and I really didn't want it to look like I was trying to cash in," Pattinson told the newspaper. "I hope it doesn't come across as that. I'm not going to be doing any music videos or anything."

If music doesn't work out, there are other options for Pattinson to pursue when his heartthrob days are over. For instance, the British actor seems to have the qualifications needed to follow his country's proud tradition of performing in drag.

"Up until I was 12, my sisters used to dress me up as a girl and introduce me as Claudia," Pattinson told the BBC. "Twelve was a turning point, as I moved to a mixed school and then I became cool and discovered hair gel."

Man, did he ever discover hair gel.

Swan Lake Ready Enemy Mine

Dan Bejar and Spencer Krug are already busy enough with their several other bands, but they'll become even busier when Swan Lake — the indie rock supergroup they're in with Carey Mercer — issue their long-awaited sophomore album.

The nine-song Enemy Mine will be released on March 24 through Jagjaguwar. It was recorded in Victoria last year and is reportedly more "stripped-down" than 2006's Beast Moans debut. Enemy Mine was originally supposed to be titled Before The Law, which was a Franz Kafka reference, but the band opted for an alternative.

Bejar is best known as the frontman of Destroyer and a member of The New Pornographers. Krug is in both Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, while Mercer is the frontman for Frog Eyes.

Here are the songs on Enemy Mine:

"Spanish Gold, 2044"
"Paper Lace"
"Heartswarm"
"Settle On Your Skin"
"Ballad Of A Swan Lake, Or, Daniel's Song"
"Peace"
"Spider"
"A Hand At Dusk"
Patrick Wolf: Gay Bashed?

A Madonna concert is probably one of the least likely places to get gay-bashed, but not if you're Patrick Wolf.

Wolf (real name Patrick Apps), who's openly bisexual, says he was assaulted by security at a Madonna concert in September. He claims bouncers at the show handcuffed him and beat him up before throwing him out of London's Wembley Arena because "conservative straight couples" didn't like seeing him kiss his boyfriend.

"Three songs in, me and my man were kissing and there were loads of conservative straight couples around us that complained," Wolf told music blog EQ. "And then the bouncers came up to me and said, 'Can you stop that? This is a family venue.' No joke.

"The bouncer said, 'You know we can do this the easy way or the violent way,' and I said, 'I'm staying, so you can do whatever you want.' And then they just grabbed both of us. We were beaten up outside Wembley, handcuffed. These guys were like football bouncers.

"The police came and it just went on and on and on. My man's face covered in blood. I couldn't move for like a month. I had to lie in bed on painkillers for ages. They totally twisted my arm and my legs — it was just mad.

"They are currently researching the CCTV — it's really nuts. We basically got beaten up by the police."

Hold on a second here. What the hell are conservative couples doing at a Madonna concert? And let me get this straight (no pun intended): These people were allegedly offended by a gay couple showing affection to each other, but a woman who's drawn fire from the Catholic church, who wears skimpy outfits on stage and has sexual themes galore in her lyrics is somehow not offensive to conservative people in any way? Wow, homophobia sucks.

The incident has prompted Wolf to vow he'll never listen to Madge again. It's not known whether he's taken any legal action over the alleged incident.

"You get into scraps with bouncers the whole time, but that was one step up because there were like seven of them and they just wanted to have a go because they were bored," Wolf said. "There was quite a lot of homophobic shit going down which I was really pissed about seeing — it's a Madonna concert, y'know!"

Wolf is working on the follow-up to 2007's The Magic Position. The double album is tentatively called Battle and will be released sometime this year.

Wolf will play MIDEM in Cannes, France on Jan. 19.
