Band Of Skulls Play At New Moon Premiere Party

TORONTO — A drizzly November evening set the tone for an evening filled vampires, werewolves and hard rock at the gala screening for The Twilight Saga: New Moon at Toronto's Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Thursday (Nov. 19) night.

Those lucky enough to attend the after-party were treated to a live performance by Band Of Skulls. The Southampton, England blues-rock trio have been turning heads worldwide this past year. And now that they have a song in one of the biggest blockbusters in pop culture, Band Of Skulls have even more to look forward to.

The band shared some reflections on their growing stardom before the screening, and talked about the song "Friends," which is featured on the New Moon soundtrack. "Friends," it turns out, is a leftover that found a happy home.

"We had extra time when we were finishing [Baby Darling Doll Face Honey], and we demoed any ideas that we had left and a couple of them didn't make it on the album. The song 'Friends' was one of them," said singer/guitarist Russell Marsden.

"Then we read in the L.A. Times that it was going to be in the film. We called our manager and we were like, 'Who are you sending our experiments to?' It was a good moment when we heard the news."

Drummer Matt Hayward said he finds it hard to believe how far the band have come since last year.

"It is a massive lifestyle change," he said. "I don't think we expected how quickly things progressed."

"We've been touring for the last four or five months now and we love it," the soul of the group, bassist Emma Richardson, humbly added. We're getting good at playing live."

Band Of Skulls' heavy tour schedule has solidified a sense of confidence within the group.

"[On tour] you gain experience and you get to know yourself as a musician and what you're capable of," said Marsden. "The music grows every night, and it changes and evolves and it's different from the record now. How we play our songs now I think will inforn how we write our next record."

Band Of Skulls strutted their rock star confidence on the red carpet, and shared the spotlight with some other celebrities. The event attracted mostly homegrown stars like cast members from Degrassi: The Next Generation, including Stefan Brogren ("Snake" Simpson), Shane Kippel (Gavin "Spinner" Mason) and Charlotte Arnold (Holly J. Sinclair).

Other appearances were made by Tre Armstrong (So You Think You Can Dance Canada) and Toronto-based pop/rock singer Fefe Dobson. A hardly recognizable and way-more-buff Robin Black looked smitten beside his partner while posing for pictures.

A cluster of Twi-hards stood closely together in the rain, hoping to get a peak of some New Moon stars. Disappointment settled in when news got out that the only two stars set to go to the premiere were Billy Burke (Bella Swan's dad, Charlie Swan) and Justin Chon (Bella's photographer friend, Eric Yorkie). Unfortunately, the New Moon premiere happened Thursday night as well, and Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen), Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan) and Taylor Lautner (Jacob Black) chose Broadway.

Burke and Chon graciously made light of the fact that they were minor actors within the film, representing the Toronto screening. During a Q&A before the film, Chon told fans to anticipate more cafeteria scenes from him in the upcoming third film, Eclipse. Burke jokingly admitted he was thankful people have started watching his movies now that he stars in The Twilight Saga.

After the screening, crowds piled into the after-party to see Band Of Skulls. The band gave the crowd a small, yet healthy dose of what they had to offer. They stirred a second wave of energy into the crowd by starting off their set with their catchy first single, "I Know What I Am," followed by the hard guitar-driven "Death By Diamonds And Pearls."

The hypnotic effect of Richardson's bass line on "Patterns" was clearly felt by the crowd, and everything came together with "Friends." The band closed with "Impossible." Marsden had his turn to take centre stage with this song and he didn't disappoint.

Marsden is definitely accurate in saying the band's sound has evolved into something new. They truly are a band ready to take on the world.

Oasis Attacker Pleads Guilty

Daniel Sullivan, the man who was accused of shoving Oasis guitarist/singer Noel Gallagher
during the band's performance at Toronto's Virgin Festival last year,
pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm in a Toronto court on
Thursday (Nov. 19).

Ruth Neilson, the Crown attorney, read a statement of facts to Justice
Richard Schneider at the Ontario Court Of Justice on Thursday, which
stated Sullivan jumped on stage during Oasis' set and shoved Gallagher
from behind, according to the Toronto Sun.

"Sullivan managed to make his way up to the main stage area, run past
the electrical cords set up along the stage, pass the drum kit and
lunge toward Noel Gallagher, shoving him violently from behind with
great force," the newspaper reports Neilson said while reading the
statement.

Gallagher broke three of his ribs when he fell onto his amplifier after being pushed. That forced Oasis to cancel some of their upcoming gigs.

After he pushed Gallagher over, Sullivan approached singer/guitarist
Liam Gallagher, Noel's brother, but was then tackled by security and
taken off stage.

The Toronto Sun reports Neilson said Sullivan was
"intoxicated" at the time of the attack and has no memory of how he was
able to get on stage.

"It appears no one attempted to prevent Sullivan from gaining access to
the stage until he was tackled on stage by Oasis," Neilson said,
according to the newspaper.

Sullivan is due back in court Feb. 5 for a sentencing hearing.

This first recording in the series explores Winnipeg's Portage Avenue. Samson narrates his movement looking at demolished buildings, Grace General Hospital and the ritualistic drive taken by Winnipeggers every Sunday.
Samson just finished a European tour.

Groove Armada Album Out In February

Groove Armada will release their sixth album, Black Light, on Feb. 23.

The disc features guest appearances from MGMT, Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry, Friendly Fires, Empire Of The Sun, Klaxons and LCD Soundsystem and apparently sounds much different from the duo's previous material.

"We could've knocked out an album of reggae-influenced house bangers and a couple of chill-out tunes, and that would've been a much easier life," Andy Cato said in a press release. "But we needed a new challenge. Neither of us was interested in just repeating ourselves."

Tom Findlay told Music Remedy the album recalls work by Gary Numan, David Bowie, New Order, Fleetwood Mac and Roxy Music. This is partly because they spent the entire recording process listening to Roxy Music's "Love Is The Drug" on repeat.

First single "I Won't Kneel" is available for download on iTunes and you can hear it on the band's MySpace page.

You can see Groove Armada here:

Jan. 15 Auckland, New Zealand @ Mt. Smart Stadium (Big Day Out 2010)
Jan. 18 Gold Coast, Australia @ Gold Coast Parklands (Big Day Out 2010)
Jan. 22 Sydney, Australia @ Sydney Showgrounds (Big Day Out 2010)
Jan. 26 Melbourne, Australia @ Flemington Racecourse (Big Day Out 2010)
Fiery Furnaces Vs. Everyone

What started off with Fiery Furnaces' Matthew Friedberger mistakenly thinking Radiohead had written a song about an experimental composer instead of a World War I vet has turned into an internet feud between Friedberger and Beck.

See, this summer Radiohead wrote a song about Harry Patch, the last surviving British World War I veteran who died earlier this year. At the beginning of this month, Friedberger thought Radiohead had written the tune about experimental composer Harry Partch (see the difference in names there?), and dissed the band in an interview with Spinner.ca.

"How's the song? Is it 48 notes to the octave?" Friedberger told Spinner. "What does it have to do with Harry Patch? Oh, my wife says I'm being very rude. She doesn't like me insulting Radiohead. She's afraid they will send their lackeys through the computer to sabotage us. But they needn't worry — we are a band that sabotages ourselves."

Friedberger later issued a statement in which he said he hadn't heard Radiohead's song about the veteran, but was sure he wouldn't like it if he did.

"No doubt Radiohead and their fans can ignore his opinion of this matter and continue with their triumphant artistic conventions," the statement read. "Matt would much have preferred to insult Beck but he is too afraid of Scientologists."

This week, Beck somewhat passive-aggressively responded to Friedberger's diss by writing a song called "Harry Partch" and posting about it on his website. It uses Partch's 43-tone scale, which Friedberger was insulting in his Spinner interview.

Friedberger responded to Beck by posting a gigantic rant entitled "IMAGINARY RESPONSE!" on the Fiery Furnaces' MySpace page in which he calls Beck's song a virtual response.

"But doesn't this imaginary feud demand imaginary responses?" the post reads. "And therefore, imaginary response songs? Shouldn't we step — isn't now the time to ascend — from the merely virtual to the boldly imaginary?"

Yeah, basically it's all like that, and you can read it here.

The 2010 Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival will take place June 10 to 13 in Manchester, Tenn.

No artists have been announced for next year's festival yet, but a holiday presale starts next Friday (Nov. 27) through the Bonnaroo website. They'll run you $209.50 as part of the presale. After they're sold out, the prices will be raised to $224.50, then $234.50 and $249.50.

If you can't afford to pay that at once, you can take advantage of Bonnaroo's layaway plan, which is available until New Year's Eve. You can make five monthly payments of $50 as part of the plan.

This year's Bonnaroo festival was headlined by Phish and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. An announcement about the 2010 festival's headliners will be made early next year.

Tristan Psionic Reunite For Sonic Unyon Xmas Party

Early '90s Canadian indie rockers Tristan Psionic will play their first show in eight years on Dec. 19 at the Sonic Unyon Christmas party at Hamilton, Ont.'s This Ain't Hollywood.

Tristan Psionic's lineup consisted of singer Sandy McIntosh, guitarist
Mark Milne, bassist Rob Higgins and drummer Tim Potocic at the time of
their dissolution.
Tristan Psionic went through three different bassists during their decade or so together and Sonic Unyon reps say both Higgins and Peter Kirkpatrick will be playing the upcoming show.

Hamilton shoegazers SIANspheric, another set of '90s revivalists, and Spirits will also perform. More acts will be announced in the coming weeks.

Admission to the show is five bones if you bring a non-perishable food item or a toy donation for Hamilton's homeless. If you don't bring either, it'll cost you $10 to get in.

Tristan Psionic began playing together in Hamilton in the early 1990s. They released their The Sounds Of Tristan Psionic through their own Sonic Unyon label in 1994. Of course, Sonic Unyon has gone on to become one of Canada's largest indie labels, and it distributes many other labels throughout the country. The Sounds Of Tristan Psionic was followed by 1996's TPA Flight 028 and 2000's Mind The Gap before the band split up around 2001.
Morrissey kicked a fan out of a show in Hamburg, Germany on Tuesday (Nov. 17) after the fan told him to "fuck off."

According to NME.com, Morrissey made a joke about how "Hamburgers" (as in people from Hamburg) should be called "Hamburgists" instead of Hamburgers. (Y'know, the whole vegetarian thing.)

An audience member then shouted "fuck you" at the former Smiths frontman, who had this response:

"Go. We don't need you, we don't need you. You can leave, and you can fuck yourself."

Morrissey's bandmates point him out while the man is presumably "escorted out" of the venue.

Put it this way, there's reason Morrissey wrote a song called "If You Don't Like Me, Don't Look At Me."

Luckily, there was no collapsing this time or any drinks being thrown at Moz's head.

Really, people should know better than to tease Moz over his diet. In April, he walked off stage at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival after smelling meat. And let's not forget how he threatened not to play Canada's Wonderland with The Smiths in the '80s if he so much as smelled a hot dog.

Here's a video of Tuesday's incident:

LIGHTS Tour Diary #2: Soundcheck The Musical

Super-heroine and keytar queen LIGHTS is currently crossing the country on a massive tour and she'll be writing tour diaries about her adventures for CHARTattack. You can read part one here. Check in next Thursday for the third installment.

Here's part two:

There's a lot to look back on once you finally come out of the chaotic mind state resulting from a relentless touring schedule. You end up recalling (with slight concern) the specific moments and decisions while in that other more tumultuous state of mind that you may not have encountered had things been... well... normal.

Perhaps you said something you didn't mean, like that time in Edmonton I cussed out my keytar when his octaver wouldn't activate. Perhaps you conceptualized an entire broadway production called Soundcheck The Musical with your band and crew, and the catchy lyric "we've done it before, we'll do it again, load in at the venue" still hasn't left your head.

Perhaps you falsely quoted Jeff Goldblum in public, only to find out it was actually the legendary Samuel L. Jackson whose line you dropped (cough*seelastblog*cough). But at least that minor slip-up can be justified by the fact that our dear Goldblum is truly the Overlord Of One-Liners, and "hold on to your butts" is a pretty epic one-liner. That brings me to my next point.

This past week has taken us across the prairies, from Calgary to Saskatoon. And each show has been so unique from the next. Every Canadian city we hit has something new to offer, and I feel at times that the best way to peg each date appropriately, taking a page from JFF GLDBLM, is to sum it up in the form of one line for the sake of simple memory filing. Concise, snappy, accessible, and true. It's genius! So here is the past week of shows in a nutshell:

In Calgary, even the Knights For Lights (literally armour-clad showgoers) couldn't outshine the energy of the packed MacEwan Hall Ballroom.

Edmonton showed me they weren't feeling their chairs by standing thick in the maxed out seated theatre for my hour and 15 minutes of electro pulsations.

My first time in Red Deer, Alta. suggested to me they should in fact be called Red Owl from the way the crowd was hooting up a storm (okay... yeah... I apologize for that one).

In Regina, despite our being greeted with a sign in the sound booth that read "It is literally impossible and pointless to mix from here," the crowd and venue (and in-house laser lighting) proved to be one of the best sounding shows on tour.

And our return last night to Louis' Pub in Saskatoon was once again a total blast, whether it was from the unseasonably warm temperatures, the bar in easy access, a couple easy tunes, or all of the above.

But honestly, all clever ways of backtracking aside, this past week has been amazing. We're all adjusting wonderfully to our new (albeit temporary) life on a bus.

We're even at the point where we're cool with the Ghost Of Pisses Past creeping the cabin in the middle of the night causing the bathroom door to slide about mysteriously, leaving a lingering hallway stench. Either that or somebody sleepwalks... which would make sense because sleeping is actually very comfortable on the bus and I understand if someone would want to sleep even while afoot.

I'm definitely feeling the advantage of this lodge on wheels. More rest to be had, more time to sit alone and play music, more tea-making resources, more family-room-style hang outs in the front lounge blasting Nirvana, Korn, Keane (we all became huge fans after our tour with them) and Joy Division, more time to whip out four laptops and delve into Moto X Racer.

In fact, spirits are so energized that we decided a night out was in order, and I'll admit right here and now that Regina took my karaoke flower. We may or may not have butchered Rage Against The Machine's "Bulls On Parade" as a team, but regardless, it was an amazing night.

As a final thought before I bow out on this week's entry, I wanted to add that it's been an extreme privilege to meet the people in real life I've seen supporting me online. When display pictures come to life and encouragement in text suddenly become real words, it takes on a really unique and special quality. It really makes the world feel smaller and a little more real. So thank you, you know who you are.

That's seven days in a precis, and until next week, "I'll be back". —Indestructible Cyborg Slayer, The Terminator, 1984.

LIGHTS.
