MGMT Are Cooler Than Everyone

MGMT don't need to open for you, Lady Gaga, U2, Coldplay and Foo Fighters. They want to maintain their indie cred and don't need the mainstream tainting them.
Andrew VanWyngarden recently said the band who've had their songs placed in television shows like Gossip Girl, 90210 and National Heads-Up Poker Championships had been offered opening slots on tours with all of the aforementioned acts, but turned every one down.
"We really didn't want to do any of that," he said, according to Yahoo! News.
Guys, you realize your music is played on modern rock radio stations, sometimes sandwiched between all of these acts, right?
That might sound dickish of him, but he then goes on to say he doesn't understand why he and band member Ben Goldwasser became suddenly popular after the release of 2007's Oracular Spectacular.
"Well, we really do feel like we were blown out of proportion by everybody," said the man . "We don't feel like pop stars, we feel like a rock band. We don't want to play arenas. It's not our mission."
MGMT's Congratulations sophomore album comes out April 12. It was recorded in Malibu, Calif. with ex-Spacemen 3 member Pete Kember and includes vocals from Royal Trux's Jennifer Herrema.
Get ready to hear lots of songs in the "what the fuck is going on?" vein, since VanWyngarden recently told NME.com the record is about the duo trying to deal with their newfound fame.
Recording in Malibu apparently meant the duo started surfing, and that must partly explain the mindbending cover for Congratulations. Did they do it while on tripping on acid? Because that's the only thing that can really explain this:
