Radiohead Guitarist Scoring Film Adaptation Of Haruki Murakami Novel

Radiohead
Radiohead are a popular band with a cultish following. Japanese author Haruki Murakami has developed a similar group of fans with his postmodern, surrealist novels. So it's only appropriate that Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood is scoring the film adaptation of Murakami's 1987 Norwegian Wood novel.

The score is based on his "Doghouse" composition, which Greenwood wrote for the BBC Concert Orchestra and performed at London, England's Maida Vale Studios in February, according to TwentyFourBit.

"I wrote this piece mostly in hotels and dressing rooms while touring with Radiohead," Greenwood said in a description on the BBC's website which has since been removed.

"This was more practical than glamourous — lots of time sitting around indoors, lots of instruments about — and aside from picking up a few geographical working titles, I can't think that it had any effect where, on tour, it was written."

Conductor Robert Ziegler met with Greenwood after the performance to discuss using "Doghouse" as the basis for Norwegian Wood's score.

If you're curious what "Doghouse" sounds like, BBC Radio 3 recorded the performance and will broadcast it on March 19 at 2 p.m. GMT (that's about 9 am. ET).

Norwegian Wood should be released sometime this fall. The Tran Anh Hung-directed (The Scent Of Green Papaya, I Come With The Rain) film stars Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Winning Pass, The Taste Of Tea) and Rinko Kikuchi.

Greenwood is working on the new Radiohead album, which, contrary to whisperings on teh intranets, is not finished.
