The Offspring, Matthew Good Headline Edmonton's Boonstock, Melvins Playing Sled Island

If watching Alanis Morissette perform at the closing ceremonies of
the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics didn't take you back to 1997, then
the lineup for this year's Boonstock certainly will.
The
Offspring and Matthew Good are among the '90s-era acts
confirmed to play the three-day festival, which runs June 24 to 26.
Take
that, Edgefest.
Now in its fifth year, Boonstock goes down in
Gibbons, Alta., which is about 20 minutes northeast of Edmonton.
Other
bands on the bill that will foggily trigger your memory include
Papa Roach, Chevelle and Shout Out Out Out Out. A ton of
local bands will also be there.
If bush parties are your thing,
you'd better get on it. Early bird tickets are already
sold-out. Papa Roach fans have to get their ya-yas out somehow, we
guess. Regular priced ducats will run you $120 for a weekend pass, or
$150 if you want to cause drunken havoc in a tent camp on site. Who
doesn't?
More information is available at Boonstock's website.
In other Alberta festival news, The Melvins are the latest act
confirmed to play this year's Sled Island Music Festival.
Three
decades into their career, the Montesano, Wash. band continue to be one
of the most influential groups in rock history. Nirvana, Soundgarden,
Mastodon and Tool have all attributed parts of their sound to The
Melvins' mix of rock, prog-rock, punk and grunge.
Sled Island
happens a week later than usual this year, running June 30 to July 3 at
various venues in Calgary. Black
Lips, Girl Talk
and Chain And The Gang are all playing this year's festival, which will
be curated
by King Khan and Quintron and Miss Pussycat.
The full Sled
Island lineup will be revealed May 1, but the organziers may bump it up
to April 1 if they get enough votes in CBC’s Best Festival Music
Festival in Canada poll.
You can vote for Sled Island (or
another festival) here.
One last thing. If your
band wants to play Sled Island, there's still time to get your package
in. The deadline for submissions is March 10. More details are available
at Sled Island's website.
