Lenny Kravitz, The Fray, Interpol Opening For U2

U2

The openers for some of U2's upcoming summer dates couldn't be much different.

Alt.funk rocker Lenny Kravitz, Joy Division-influenced nu-post-punks Interpol and piano rockers The Fray have all been tapped to warm the 360 stage up for the Irish quartet at select shows in June and July.

They won't all play on the same bill. Kravitz will open U2's shows from June 3 to 12, while The Fray will do the honours from June 16 to 23, including a date at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. Interpol will finish things off from June 27 to July 12, and will be on hand when U2 play Toronto's Rogers Centre on July 3.

Openers for U2's July 16 and 17 shows at Montreal's Hippodrome and East Rutherford, N.J.'s New Meadowlands Stadium have not yet been announced.

Interpol are preparing to release their first album since 2007's Our Love To Admire, and the shows with U2 will be their first gigs since 2008.

Although there's little known about the new album so far, bassist Carlos D has written orchestral arrangements for it, according to Spin.com, and frontman Paul Banks says the as-yet-untitled disc is "elegant."

Kravitz is planning to release his ninth studio album, Negrophilia, sometime this year, though it's not known when it'll be out either. It's said to be a funk-rock album and he told New York Magazine the title comes from a book he read about the fascination French people have with black musicians.

"When I made my first album, the Americans didn't know what to do with me," Kravitz told the magazine.

"Here's a black Jew, light-skinned, he's not doing hip-hop. I didn't fit in any box, because America's all about formats, and Paris was one of the first places I went. And they accepted me, like being Josephine Baker or any jazz artist or whoever."

The Fray released their self-titled sophomore album last year. It's since gone gold in the U.S., Canada and Australia. They began working on its follow-up last summer.
