Alexisonfire Olympics Show Cancelled After Crowd Breaks Barricade, Fans Injured

Simple fences and barricades are not enough to contain the force of thousands of Alexisonfire fans.

The St. Catharines, Ont. were forced to cancel their free Olympics show at Vancouver's LiveCity Yaletown venue on Tuesday (Feb. 16) night before they'd even finished the first song because the crowd rushed the stage, causing a barricade to collapse.

According to the Vancouver Sun, the shoving and pushing began as soon as the quintet took the stage, and the barricade broke under the crowd's weight. About 7,600 people had gathered to watch Alexisonfire perform.

The Vancouver Sun reports about 20 people were injured as a result of the pushing and barricade collapse, with nine people taken to hospital.

Alexisonfire immediately stopped their set, and vocalist George Pettit asked people to move back, according to The Georgia Straight. But because the barricade had broken into sharp pieces, the situation became too dangerous for the band to continue.

"We were all so excited that you completely decimated the whole barrier," guitarist/singer Wade MacNeil said in a video of the incident, which can be seen below. "But the reality of the situation is it's completely destroyed, and it's really dangerous, and there's an incredible amount of sharp objects up here and a lot of people that got hurt when that happened."

The show won't be rescheduled.

"Unfortunately, it brings us to a very difficult situation," Pettit continued to resounding boos from the crowd.

"When bad situations happen, this is what happens. I'm sorry. We are going to do our best to come back."

The venue was then evacuated while emergency personnel helped those who'd been injured, according to the Toronto Sun.

An unfortunate series of... accidents. (Ha, ha, ha.)
