Shane MacGowan, Nick Cave, Johnny Depp, Primal Scream Frontman On Haiti Single

Shane MacGowan

Shane MacGowan's known for having had (he got new ones last year) extremely bad teeth, Johnny Depp's played a pirate with atrocious dental work and Nick Cave sings about baring one's teeth, so perhaps that's the common bond that brought these three together to record a charity single for Haiti.

Of course, all three celebrities also have dedicated, cultish followings, and Depp and Cave are also MacGowan's friends.

The Pogues frontman has decided he wants to cover Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put A Spell On You" with some of his friends, and all the proceeds from sales of the single will go to Haitian earthquake relief, according to The Guardian.

The newspaper reports Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie is also apparently on board, as is Depp's girlfriend, singer/actress Vanessa Paradis (Sage Femme, Mon Ange).

Photographer Danny Clifford wrote about the single on his blog on Tuesday (Jan. 26).

"My mate is organising a charity single to help raise loads of money for Haiti and the people who need it most," he wrote. "It's all top secret at the moment. But, [sic] I will be photographing it all and telling you all more as soon as I can.

"There are some very big names involved and one of them is my mate Shane MacGowan. He is a good sport. So, later this week all will be revealed."

It's not known when the cover of "I Put A Spell On You" will be released, nor if more musicians and celebrities will appear on the track or what organization(s) will receive the profits.

"I Put A Spell On You" was originally released in 1956 and has since been covered by the likes of Nina Simone, Cave's former band the Birthday Party, Champion, Eels, The Kills, Roxy Music, She & Him, Pete Townshend, Iggy Pop and others.
