The search for a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who went missing during a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Va. on Oct. 17 has ended on a tragic note.

Morgan Harrington's remains were discovered in a remote field by a farmer inspecting fences on his 700-acre property in southern Albemarle County, about 10 miles from the concert venue.

Virginia State Police confirmed the remains were Harrington's on Wednesday (Jan. 27) afternoon, after using dental records provided by her family, according to CNN.

"Morgan's mother, Gil, and I are overwhelmingly saddened by yesterday's discovery, but we are also relieved because our questions can now be answered and we can give our daughter a proper burial," Dan Harrington, the missing student's father, said, according to Fox News.

The education major became separated from friends after leaving the John Paul Jones Arena to use a restroom and was later denied re-entry. Her purse and cell phone were found in a parking lot next to the arena the following day. Harrington was last seen wearing a Pantera T-shirt, a black mini-skirt, black tights and black boots.

The case received national attention, with hundreds of volunteers as well as law officials involved in the search. A $150,000 U.S. (about $160,000 Canadian) reward was being offered for information leading to Harrington's whereabouts with Metallica contributing $50,000 to the total.

The band also held a heavy metal benefit concert on Jan. 16 in Richmond, Va. with ticket proceeds going to the Find Morgan Fund.
