Nirvana Inspire Muse To Make Tour Documentary

Muse

One wouldn't really think Muse were that inspired by Nirvana, given their sound is operatic nu-prog that's more influenced by the likes of Queen than anyone else.

But regardless, Muse say they want to copy Nirvana's 1994 Live! Tonight! Sold Out! tour documentary.

"We'd like to do something a little bit more along the lines of a touring documentary as opposed to just a live gig this time," bassist Chris Wolstenholme said in an interview with BBC 6music.

"Something a little bit more like Nirvana's Live! Tonight! Sold Out! I think that was one of the best tour documentaries I've ever watched; just life on the road and what it's like, with obviously a bit of music here and there, and other loads of other random stuff as well."

Muse have released live albums and tour DVDs before in 2002's Hullabaloo: Live At Le Zenith, Paris, 2005's Absolution Tour and 2008's HAARP. But those were all live albums depicting the band's gigs, and they didn't really focus on backstage chicanery or Muse's experiences on the road.

Most of the video on Live! Tonight! Sold Out!, which contains footage of the band's performances from 1991 to 1993, was compiled by the late Kurt Cobain, and the film itself wasn't finished when he committed suicide on April 5, 1994.

Following Cobain's death, drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic worked with director Kevin Kerslake to finish the film, which came out in November of that year on VHS and laserdisc(!!!). The film also follows the band on the road.

In other Muse-related news, the band are auctioning a drum kit Dominic Howard used on tour from 2006 to 2008 to raise money for Haitian earthquake relief.

The band are part of an Oxfam-organized auction that also features items from Florence + The Machine, Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys and PJ Harvey up for grabs.

You can bid on Howard's kit here. Be aware you'll need plenty of cash to do so, though, as it's already going for 501 pounds (about $860 Canadian) and that includes shipping.

The rest of the items in the Oxfam auction can be found here.
